Social Issues In the Novel Vs Canada Now
1.
Since the novel
took place during the 20th century where women still did not have
the right to vote and women were deemed less intelligent than men and women tend
to be house wives. The author made it a point that Anne was given an education.
The author made sure to also note that both men and women equally intelligent
and talented noted during Anne and Gilbet school rivalry to see who is at the
top of the class. The author does show different gender role stereotypes in the
book, like how men are the providers and go out and make money while the women
stay home and take care of the kids. However Anne wanted to further her
education and she wanted to become a teacher. Some social issues that we faced
today that relate to the book is the gender wage gap. According to data from
the Labour Force Survey, women in Canada aged 15 and older earned $0.87 for
every dollar earned by men in 2017, as measured by average hourly wages. Women
are being paid 13 cents less than a man simply because they are women. Today
our government made sure in the budget they focussed on gender equality. The
government decided to introduce pay transparency bill which will require all
business looking for people to hire to include their salary rate or range, bar
employers from asking about past compensation and prohibit retaliation against
employees who do discuss or talk about compensation. The federal government is
also planning to table pay equity legislation, which is equal pay for equal work,
that it says will help combat the 13 cents hourly wage gap that exists between
men and women who work full-time. Although there are problems with gender issues
in today society, the government is taking a good approach by acknowledging the
problem in the federal budget and attempting to fix it.
